A Petrov-Galerkin Finite Element Method for Fractional Convection-Diffusion Equations
نویسندگان
چکیده
In this work, we develop variational formulations of Petrov-Galerkin type for one-dimensional fractional boundary value problems involving either a Riemann-Liouville or Caputo derivative of order α ∈ (3/2, 2) in the leading term and both convection and potential terms. They arise in the mathematical modeling of asymmetric super-diffusion processes in heterogeneous media. The well-posedness of the formulations and sharp regularity pickup of the variational solutions are established. A novel finite element method is developed, which employs continuous piecewise linear finite elements and “shifted” fractional powers for the trial and test space, respectively. The new approach has a number of distinct features: It allows deriving optimal error estimates in both L(D) and H(D) norms; and on a uniform mesh, the stiffness matrix of the leading term is diagonal and the resulting linear system is well conditioned. Further, in the Riemann-Liouville case, an enriched FEM is proposed to improve the convergence. Extensive numerical results are presented to verify the theoretical analysis and robustness of the numerical scheme.

Finite Element Methods for Convection Diffusion Equation
This paper deals with the finite element solution of the convection diffusion equation in one and two dimensions. Two main techniques are adopted and compared. The first one includes Petrov-Galerkin based on Lagrangian tensor product elements in conjunction with streamlined upwinding. The second approach represents Bubnov/Petrov-Galerkin schemes based on a new group of exponential elements. It ...
متن کاملContinuous and Discontinuous Finite Element Methods for Convection-Diffusion Problems: A Comparison
We compare numerically the performance of a new continuous-discontinuous finite element method (CDFEM) for linear convection-diffusion equations with three well-known upwind finite element formulations, namely with the streamline upwind Petrov-Galerkin finite element method, the residualfree bubble method and the discontinuous Galerkin finite element method. The defining feature of the CDFEM is...
متن کاملNumerical Studies of Galerkin-type Time-discretizations Applied to Transient Convection-diffusion-reaction Equations
We deal with the numerical solution of time-dependent convection-diffusion-reaction equations. We combine the local projection stabilization method for the space discretization with two different time discretization schemes: the continuous Galerkin-Petrov (cGP) method and the discontinuous Galerkin (dG) method of polynomial of degree k. We establish the optimal error estimates and present numer...
متن کاملA study of isogeometric analysis for scalar convection-diffusion equations
Isogeometric Analysis (IGA), in combination with the Streamline Upwind Petrov– Galerkin (SUPG) stabilization, is studied for the discretization of steady-state convection-diffusion equations. Numerical results obtained for the Hemker problem are compared with results computed with the SUPG finite element method of the same order. Using an appropriate parameterization for IGA, the computed solut...
متن کاملFinite integration method with RBFs for solving time-fractional convection-diffusion equation with variable coefficients
In this paper, a modification of finite integration method (FIM) is combined with the radial basis function (RBF) method to solve a time-fractional convection-diffusion equation with variable coefficients. The FIM transforms partial differential equations into integral equations and this creates some constants of integration. Unlike the usual FIM, the proposed method computes constants of integ...
